A private network app for retail's most senior leaders

Rarely Heard Voices is an invitation-only community of retail founders, C-suite and brand partners. I designed the product and built the front-end: a progressive web app that installs like a native app on iOS and Android and runs from one React codebase.

01 · The briefThe room is the product

The community had built one of retail's most respected gatherings, but the energy lived in the room and dissipated in the weeks after. Business cards were lost, names forgotten, conversations stalled.

The brief was a private, mobile-first product that felt as considered as the rooms it convenes: something that protects members' attention, respects their seniority, and turns face-to-face moments into a year-round network, without ever feeling like another social app.

"The room is the product. The app should feel like the room."

That line shaped every screen, from the editorial serif type and single gold accent to the deliberate absence of likes, follower counts and infinite feeds. It is a tool for relationships, not engagement metrics.

02 · PrinciplesFour rules that decided every screen

  • Editorial over social. Cormorant Garamond display type, generous whitespace and one warm gold on cream. It reads like a members' journal, not a feed. Restraint signals seniority.
  • Quiet by default. Notifications, reactions and badges are restrained. Trending content is shown as a calm pulse bar, never a leaderboard.
  • Two-sided by design. Every networking action requires mutual consent before it surfaces a connection.
  • Native-feeling on iOS. Full-height viewports, safe-area-aware bottom navigation, pull-to-refresh and GPU-composited transitions, so an installed web app feels like an App Store one.

03 · Information architectureSix tiers, one invisible inner circle

The network runs on six membership levels including a discreet inner circle, the Boardroom, that had to remain invisible to outsiders and appear as standard C-suite to lower tiers. Members only ever see peers at their own tier or below, and Boardroom members can elect a public-facing proxy from the wider community.

Getting this right was mostly IA and permissions work before it was UI work: a tier-aware permissions model that the directory, messaging, events and admin console all share, so the rule is enforced once and everywhere.

04 · Defining flowsWould Like To Meet, and the rest

  • Would Like To Meet. The signature mechanic. Rather than a one-tap follow, a member sends a structured request with context for why. A separate board lets members post open requests the community can respond to.
  • Two-party messaging with voice notes, typing indicators and read receipts that survive a reload.
  • Typed posts (signal, question, insight, data, request) with anonymous posting where the subject needs it.
  • Events with RSVP, QR check-in and a matchmaking engine for the day itself.

05 · BuildDesigned in Figma, shipped in React

I built the front-end as well as designing it: React 18 and Vite, Tailwind with the RHV token set, Supabase for auth, data, realtime and storage, edge functions for email and rate limiting, and Capacitor to wrap the same code for the App Store and Play Store. Design tokens live in one place and drive the member app, the admin console and the event-day tools.

Engineering decisions that came from design intent: a dual-mode data layer so the app still opens with no signal; an auto-updating PWA so members never see an "update available" wall; rate limits on posting so the feed stays calm; and a GDPR consent flow with a photo privacy gate, because the members are exactly the people who care.

06 · OutcomeA network that respects its audience

The app shipped as a magazine-quality mobile experience that members install to their home screen and use like a native app. Sponsor surfaces read as editorial placement, not ads. Every networking action is deliberate and two-sided.

The wider community it serves counts 800+ members across 60+ countries, with eight or more events a year, and the app continues to ship several times a week.
